Memorial Day is the official start of the summer season and if you are looking for something other than a parade or a cook-out, here is a sampling of some interesting Memorial Day events.

Animals & Acrobats takes visitors back to the days of the traveling circus with fire jugglers, tumbling acrobats, rope walkers and magicians as they used to travel the countryside as a ragged band of entertainers, setting up shop at various locations in Van Cortlandt Manor. Continuous performances over the holiday weekend feature a baby bear, airborne acrobats, contortionists, and are lead by Ringmaster Jonathan Kruk.  Van Cortlandt Manor, 525 South Riverside Avenue (off Route 9), Croton-on-Hudson. Saturday through Monday, 10am to 5pm.

The U.S. Marine Corps will demonstrate a helicopter search and rescue effort at Playland Park on Sunday. The West Point Concert Band will perform for Service Member Appreciation Day on Sunday at noon.  Playland Beach, Playland Park, Rye.

If a marching band is a must, Mamaroneck will begin its annual Memorial Day parade at 5 pm on Sunday outside the Mamaroneck Avenue School. The parade will head down Mamaroneck Avenue, turn onto Prospect Avenue and finish up at the American Legion Post 90 at 189 Prospect Avenue.

Happy Memorial Day!

The plots of land in Lawrence Park are often larger than many of those found in the Village of Bronxville, and the neighborhood has an estate-like quality about it. The physical beauty of the neighborhood is characterized by sweeping lawns, manicured and mature landscaping and stately homes built with quality details from the 1920’s and 30’s. “Just over the border” from Bronxville, the taxing authority is the City of Yonkers, but the amenities of Lawrence Park West rival those of Bronxville in that Lawrence Hospital is around the corner, Sarah Lawrence College is adjacent to the neighborhood and the Bronxville train station is close by.

Each home is “architecturally distinguished” although there are contemporaries as well as homes dating from the early 1900’s. The Landmark Protection status assures the preservation of the physical beauty of the neighborhood. Cedar Knolls is also renowned for their social gatherings and active neighborhood association.

We are hosting numerous Open Houses in Lawrence Park West on Sunday, May 15 to highlight the attributes of the area.

HL HH Tour 300x225 Yorktowns Historic House TourThe 2011 Historic House Tour wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of the many volunteers and the support of the sponsors. I’d like to extend great thanks to all the sponsors: Douglas Dill, Houlihan Lawrence, Frayer’s Florist, Sports Barn, Country Florist, Chris DiPasquale, and the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown.  Additionally, it’s important to recognize and thank those that opened their magnificent homes to us: the Ward family, the Peters family, the Krowe family, the Kenny family and Peter Pratts.

Thanks to all for an enjoyable step back in time.

914inc Launch Event in White PlainsSpotlight publications introduced “914INC.”, a new business lifestyle magazine at a launch party recently held in White Plains at the Arts Exchange Gallery on Mamaroneck Avenue.

The event was well attended and guests were served a variety of delicious appetizers, beverages and passed hors d’oeuvres. While sampling the fare I had the opportunity to meet Robert Schork, Executive Editor of “914INC.”.  I noted his excitement for the project and his enthusiasm for the Westchester County business community.

Arts Exchange 150x150 Launch Event in White PlainsAs a former White Plains resident, I was impressed by the restoration of White Plain’s first skyscraper, originally the home of the People’s National Bank and Trust Company, built in 1929. I was also pleased to see how viable and lively the nightlife has become in downtown White Plains – no longer just a commuter town, but a destination for fun and entertainment.

Real Estate in Westchester Gives Back

Houlihan Lawrence is pleased to be one of several Westchester County area brokerage firms whose agents have been selected to participate in Giving House.

Giving House was established by real estate professionals to provide the real estate community with a turn-key solution for incorporating philanthropy into their day-to-day business. Specifically, Giving House agents pledge to donate 20% of their commission to Giving House. Buyers and sellers can request to work with a Giving House agent, allowing them to “give back” because they are working with a Giving House agent. Developers can make their home or community a Giving House project, which means that a contribution is made to Giving House with every sale. The net effect is that real estate transactions can help support worthy causes and buyers, sellers, agents and developers can play a role in this effort.

The kick-off party for Giving House is being held this week at Purchase Manor, an estate home built in Purchase, NY by Simone Development and one of the first Giving House homes. Joe Simone, President of Simone Development, is hosting the event, which surely will be the start of something special in the real estate community.
