This Saturday, October 15th, please join Pound Ridgers and folks from neighboring communities for a  music- filled afternoon at the Pound Ridge Harvest Festival headlined by the famed singer/songwriter Edwin McCain. Joining the award-winning McCain will be young local talent, students of the School of Rock in Bedford.

It’s going to be a very special day in Pound Ridge with a beer tent, wine tasting, autumn-themed foods and plenty of activities for the kids including a hay-pile scramble and jumpy castle. Proceeds will benefit the Beautification Fund of the Pound Ridge Partnership, and Houlihan Lawrence is pleased to be a supporter of this fun event.

Fiberglass or Cellulose Insulation?

In our September 16th edition of our e-newsletter, Real Estate Market Intelligence, we distributed an article entitled “New Ways to Use Less Energy at Home” that was originally published in the Wall Street Journal.
The Wall Street Journal article discussed the relative benefits of using fiberglass insulation vs. cellulose insulation. As we all know, there are two sides to every story. One of our readers, Richard Cherry, President of Community Environmental Center, sent us a compelling argument for using cellulose over fiberglass. You can read his side of the story here in an article titled Cellulose: Greening NYC’s Insulation Practices.
We’d like to thank Richard for bringing us his point of view. We always welcome an open dialogue on articles appearing in our newsletter. If you have a question or comment on an article we’d like to hear from you.

More Than Just a Walk

Strides11 More Than Just a WalkHoulihan Lawrence Real Estate is pleased to announce our continued support as a Flagship Sponsor of the Westchester County 2011 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.  In fact, I believe we’re celebrating our 15th year as a flagship sponsor.

Each year, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking about why this cause is so important to the Houlihan Lawrence family. It all stems from two of our core values: community and passion. We want to help the communities in which we live and work. And we do it because we’re passionate about it.

Breast cancer is a devastating disease that knows no boundaries – young and old, female and male. We’re all touched by it in some way during our lifetime. I dream of a day that there will be a cure. I guarantee we all do.

As the American Cancer Society phrases it best, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is “more than just a walk, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event describes the progress we’re making together to save lives by helping people get well, stay well, find cures and fight back.”

Today’s kick-off breakfast at the Westchester Marriott was a reminder for us to put on our fundraising hats. Our 15 team captains have already started raising donations and are planning to exceed the amounts they raised last year. You might guess that Realtors are slightly competitive, so I have no doubts that we’ll break our own record.

The most inspirational part of the morning was hearing from a 17 year old student from the Harvey School. He’s been attending the walk since he was two years old and his Mother would push him in a stroller. He is now a member of the Pacesetter Club - an elite group of fundraisers who raise over $2500 each year. I was brought to tears by his compassion and generosity…not to mention his ability to speak so eloquently to a group of 700 attendees.

We hope you’ll join us for the walk on Sunday, October 16th at Manhattanville College. We’re hoping to raise awareness, raise money and one day there will be a cure.

028 150x150 Houlihan Lawrence Hosts Christies Networking EventEarlier this week, Houlihan Lawrence hosted over 60 of our own agents as well agents from prestigious brokerages exclusively affiliated with Christie’s International Real Estate. The backdrop for the networking breakfast was Will O’Woods, a stunning 45 acre setting highlighted by a 1930′s era Art-Deco home overlooking a private 8 acre lake in Croton-on-Hudson, listed by David Turner of our Bedford Brokerage.

The morning event began with a tour of the estate, followed by an alfresco breakfast by the lake catered by Bedford Gourmet. Stephen Meyers, CEO of Houlihan Lawrence, welcomed the crowd by saying, “Real Estate is often viewed as local. We agree. But it’s also about relationships that transcend boundaries.”

An impressive line-up of speakers followed, discussing the uptick in the New York City luxury market and how that affected the marketing of luxury homes in our area. Among the speakers were Anthony Cutugno, Sr Vice President, Luxury Country Properties of Houlihan Lawrence, Peter Marra, Executive Vice President of Brown Harris Stevens, New York City, David Ogilvy, Broker/Owner of David Ogilvy & Associates, Greenwich, CT, and Kathy Coumou, Vice President of Christie’s International Real Estate.

Following the discussion of the luxury market, the agents had the opportunity to network with one another. Not all buyers are local, so it is important for agents to build ties with their peers from neighboring marketing areas to maximize exposure for their listings and to be able to place referrals with confidence.

Houlihan Lawrence and Douglas Dill, a licensed sales associate with our Yorktown brokerage, recently sponsored the Yorktown Historic House Tour. Community members of all ages joined the fun including historical society members, Yorktown dignitaries, high school volunteers and 4th graders from the Crompond School. It was a special day as all proceeds were being donated to Relay for Life, a local non-profit chartiy event for the American Cancer Society.

The Tour, held on Sunday, May 1st, included the following historical homes: The Elijah Lee House, The Underhill House, The Davenport House, The Daniel Strang House, and Peter Pratt’s.

HL HH Tour 300x225 Yorktowns Historic House TourThe 2011 Historic House Tour wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of the many volunteers and the support of the sponsors. I’d like to extend great thanks to all the sponsors: Douglas Dill, Houlihan Lawrence, Frayer’s Florist, Sports Barn, Country Florist, Chris DiPasquale, and the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown.  Additionally, it’s important to recognize and thank those that opened their magnificent homes to us: the Ward family, the Peters family, the Krowe family, the Kenny family and Peter Pratts.

Thanks to all for an enjoyable step back in time.
