Ever picture yourself waking up in an English manor, a Gilded Age treasure or other design masterpiece?  These masterworks can all be found here in the Hudson Valley, which has long been an inspiring backdrop for the many design luminaries who came to our region to spin their special magic. Following are a few spectacular architect-designed  homes selected from our current luxury properties for sale that are sure to capture your imagination.

All-American architect Mott B Schmidt built his reputation for creating an English-country lifestyle for New York’s social elite including the Vanderbilt, Astor and Rockefeller families. In 1934, Schmidt designed an impressive Georgian Manor in North Salem for Richard W. Woolworth, heir to the Woolworth fortune. Known as Northshire, this authentically-detailed brick manse is a fine example of the English-style classicism for which Schmidt is famed.

Celebrated Gilded Age architect Stanford White conceived Astor Courts in Rhinebeck, a circa 1906 Beaux Arts structure set on 50 acres overlooking the Hudson River. Originally part of John Jacob Astor IV’s estate, Ferncliff, the home houses a stunning indoor pool, believed to be the first residential indoor pool ever built  in the United States.

Killearn Farm in Millbrook claims a rich provenance as it was designed and built by Tristram Coffin in the mid-19th century. A noted architect of his era famed for his classical buildings and intricate detailing, Coffin created many beautiful homes on Nantucket and throughout New England.

Renowned architectural firm Shope Reno Wharton  is responsible for the impressive barn at this 70+ acre equestrian estate in North Salem. In addition to eight stalls,  the barn features a large office, paneled tack room, an apartment and expansive loft area with breathtaking views. What lucky horses!

In 1924, popular society architect Maurice Fatio built a unique country home in Pound Ridge. Known as Great Hill, the residence blends the graceful lines of classic architecture with the distinctive flair of an antebellum plantation home. Perhaps Fatio took his southern inspiration from the homes he designed for the Vanderbilt, Schiff and Rockefeller families in Palm Beach.
