Fun at the Dutchess County Fair

Last year I vowed I would get to the Dutchess County Fair to see what it was all about. To be truthful, I was mostly interested in having funnel cake. I picked up my niece and nephews, stopped at an ATM machine and we headed north to Rhinebeck, NY. It was everything I expected from a State fair – rides, food, games, animals, a parade, music and more!

The parade - lots of animals!

Though my wallet was drained (twice since I had to find an ATM on the fairgrounds as well) it was worth it. The kids and I had a great time. They played the carnival games, rode all the rides, visited the wildlife exhibit, ate funnel cake and burgers, drank fresh lemonade and milkshakes, and had their caricatures done. They even got to see Senator Charles Schumer, who walked right by us, shaking hands and kissing babies. We got a great picture of his back as he turned away from us a little too fast. Oh well.

When I told my husband I was taking them again this year, he asked if I needed to take out a loan for it. Yes – it’s not an inexpensive day but it’s a fun one just the same. To me, worth every penny! I often recommend attending the fair to families that are considering relocating to the area and are in town touring or house hunting during the week of the fair. It’s a wonderful way to experience Dutchess County. This year the fair runs from August 24th to the 29th. Will you be there?

If you’ve been asked to relocate to a new city, ask yourself this question: Is my employer considering my ENTIRE family when offering to provide me with relocation services?

In an effort to win the war for talent and protect their return on investment, employers are finally recognizing the need to provide viable services and support not only to their employee, but to each member of the transferring family as well.

family needs Consider Family Needs When RelocatingFamily issues have always been a concern in relocation but it’s recently become more of a hot topic as employers find the need to be more flexible with their policies to meet the specific needs of each family. I co-authored an article for Mobility Magazine on this subject that published this month.

A Magical Place for Special Needs Children

Our Relocation Team frequently handles unique requests. This is the story of how we helped meet a family’s unique need.

Recently, a relocating family requested information on whether their autistic child could continue their therapeutic horseback riding in our area. While Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties are known for horse farms and riding centers, this was something unfamiliar to us.

Pegasus A Magical Place for Special Needs ChildrenOur research began by speaking with our agents who are avid riders, calling local riding centers and conducting online searches.  We were pleased to discover that the Pegasus Farm’s Therapeutic Riding Program fit the bill. Created in 1975, the Pegasus organization provides the therapeutic benefits of horseback riding to physically, emotionally and developmentally challenged individuals at facilities and stables in New York and Connecticut.

Today, Pegasus assists more than 200 children and adults at their 20 acre farm in Brewster, NY. All of their instructors are certified by NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, Inc.) and supported by numerous dedicated volunteers.

It’s wonderful that these programs exist locally and rewarding to know that this child would be able to continue to ride after moving to Westchester County.  Needless to say the parents were thrilled that one thing could remain constant for their child after their cross-country move.

For more information on Pegasus Therapeutic Riding program visit their website, and get more information on therapeutic horseback riding from NARHA or the New York State Horse Council.

Thinking About Relocating?

When faced with a possible relocation, the first questions that come to mind are: “Can I afford to live there? What will my family’s quality of life be? How will we all acclimate to the new area?”

A well-executed pre-decision tour of the new area can answer these questions and help you make an educated decision on what’s best for you and your family. Many real estate companies provide a service conducting pre-decision area tours to job candidates considering a new job or a job transfer.

At Houlihan Lawrence, we’ll start by sending you a comprehensive relocation package – knowing the more you learn about the new area, the more comfortable you will feel about relocating.

One of our relocation managers will speak with you and create an area tour itinerary that is tailored to your family’s specific needs. Hand selecting the most appropriate/best sales associate for each area is a key component to the process.

Just last week, we provided area tours for an out-of-state job candidate with a local pharmaceutical company.

The potential transferee and his wife were avid bike riders and were interested in biking to work. We provided information on the local cycling clubs, maps of the biking trails throughout the county and took them to view some of the trails. They left knowing they didn’t have to give up their passion for bike riding if they moved here and felt that it was definitely possible to find an affordable home within biking distance to work.

Often, the tour is a determining factor of whether you’ll accept the job. Without these services you could end up driving aimlessly through the area and not get the proper feel for all it has to offer. But with our agent-guided tour – and if we’ve done our job correctly – you will leave here excited to move and ready to start packing!
